Happy, Healthy, Holy: Women’s Health Symposium

by Jeanie Shaw

Women's Symposium“This is exactly what I needed!” “I’ve already put into practice several important things I learned” are just two responses from women who took part in the Boston Church of Christ’s health symposium entitled, “Happy, Healthy, Holy”.
Hundreds of women gathered on Saturday morning, May 17, at the Burlington Marriott. The program opened with a comedy and song parody taken from show tunes and “oldies” –rewritten to highlight the many special “joys” found in women’s health issues. Ruby Mitchell, Kristen Lamb and Jeanie Shaw dared to tread where “no man would dare to go” as they sang of pap smears, mammograms, “h-o-r-m-o-n-e: and various other topics. The crowd then “danced” to Morgan William’s rendition of Pharrell William’s song, “Happy.” The worship team led us in several powerful and meaningful songs to help prepare our hearts to be fed by our guest speaker, Lynne Green, from Berlin, Germany.
Lynne powerfully taught on the subject of Happy, Healthy and Holy as she guided us, through scripture, toward ways to let go of thoughts that take our minds down harmful paths—and as she vulnerably shared her spiritual journey as she went through a battle with cancer. You can hear her heart-moving message here (Will be posted later).

After Lynne spoke, the women gained many practical tools for a healthier lifestyle as they attended classes taught by numerous health professionals. Dr. Rachelle Darout, MD, shared important health issues relevant to women in the 20-35 age range. Karen Potter, MS HHC, also taught this group the importance of nutrition in gaining and maintaining healthy bodies. You can listen to their classes here.

Nancy Mathews, RN,BSN,CCN, taught a class for women aged 35-50(ish). Women in this age group have specific needs as well, which were addressed by Nancy. Karen Potter taught her class on nutrition to this age group as well. You can hear Nancy’s class here.
Dr. Karen Kolarik, DC, and Dr. Rhonda Lewis, MD addressed health needs most relevant to the 50 plus age group. Listen to their classes here.

All of these professionals helped hundreds of women learn how to be better aware and better prepared—enabling us to take care of our “temple of God’s spirit”. We left more equipped to live lives that are happy, healthy and holy.
